Pollen products

Natural vitamins with a wide range of nutritional and healing properties. Lithuanian-Baltic pollen is collected mainly from wild plants and is distinguished by its original aroma and taste.

Pollen products

Pollen is a unique and natural product. It is a complex combination of physiologically active substances. There is no food in nature that matches the composition in all its components that are necessary for the normal development and function of the body. Bee pollen can help compensate for vitamin and mineral deficiencies that modern people tend to experience due to the insufficient nutritional value from their food choices. Pollen is a great source of enzymes and offers more antioxidants than any fruit or vegetable. As little as two teaspoons of pollen contain the same amount of antioxidants as a serving of vegetables. Pollen is not chemically contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and other contaminants. It meets the highest requirements for raw materials for pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements.

Lithuanian pollen is distinctive for its wide range of colours and exceptional fragrance and flavour that are only typical of this region. The flavour and colour intensity varies depending on when the pollen is collected: from a sweet and mild taste in spring to a somewhat bitter flavour in August; from light yellow at the beginning of the season to a darker, greenish, purple, dark brown, and black at the end of the season. The diameter of the granules ranges from 1.5 mm to 4 mm.

Our pollen is collected from the flowers of plants growing in the northern latitudes only. This pollen contains flowers that cannot be found in the pollen from other regions, such as Spain. As a result, our pollen’s botanical composition is known to be richer and to contain more active ingredients, reaching as many as 50. It is collected from a variety of wildflowers whose list can extend to 70 during the honey flow season.

The most important component of pollen is protein. It is also rich in carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, minerals, vitamins, and other substances necessary for improving human health. Pollen has antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, and antiviral properties. The large amount of antiallergens, as well as anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory compounds in pollen can alleviate the symptoms of hay-fever. Pollen has healing and immune-boosting properties. It can improve cardiovascular function, reduce inflammation and cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of cancer, improve fertility, and treat urinary tract and venereal diseases. It also improves vision.

Frequently asked questions

Pollen is the male gamete of plants – but only the ones that flower. Plants are pollinated when the wind lifts the male gametes into the air and transports them to the female ones. Similarly, this happens when a bee flies from one flower to another. Bees collect pollen in spring and summer from a wide variety of flowers, both wild and cultivated plants. In a day, a bee can visit approximately 4 000 flowers and bring around 20 mg of pollen to the beehive. During their flight from flower to flower, bees moisten the collected pollen using nectar and saliva and roll it up into a small ball at their hind legs. Beekeepers use a special grid at the opening of the beehive to collect this pollen. As the bee passes through it, some of the pollen balls are combed out and left behind in a special pollen container. Then the beekeeper can simply transfer it into a clean container, dry it and package it.

Bee pollen is largely valued for its rich composition. The most important component of bee pollen is complete protein, which makes up around 26% to 40% of the ingredients. Pollen contains 5 to 7 times more amino acids than beef and eggs. In addition to that, it contains nucleic acids and nucleoproteins, as well as around 20% of vegetable fats, vitamin D, Bj, B2, B5, B6, PP, E, biotin, and folic acid. It is rich in vitamin C and rutin. Out of all the mineral substances found in pollen, potassium is probably the most important – there is 400 mg of potassium in 100 g of pollen. It also contains a substantial amount of phosphorus and magnesium, as well as iron, zinc, and cobalt.

WILD MEADOW HONEY offers Lithuanian pollen, which is primarily collected from the flowering plants in the natural environment. Pollen that has been collected in Lithuania is distinctive due to the flowers that are only typical to the northern latitudes. Our pollen’s botanical composition is known to be richer and to contain more active ingredients than that of the southern regions because the number of flowering plants during the pollen season is much higher than in the south and the pollen season here is shorter.

WILD MEADOW HONEY Pollen is distinctive for its wide range of colours and exceptional fragrance and flavour that are typical of this region only. The flavour and colour intensity varies depending on the time the pollen is collected: from a sweet and mild taste in spring to a somewhat bitter flavour in July. The colour changes from a light yellow and greenish to purple, dark brown, and black at the end of the season. The diameter of the pollen granules ranges from 1.5 mm to 4 mm.

Our pollen does not contain any heavy metals, chemical contaminants, pesticides and other pollutants. It is cleaned and dried to a high standard. It has an excellent marketable appearance and organoleptic properties. It meets the highest raw material requirements for pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements. It has a good microbiological status.

Pollen was first used for food and medicines following the World War II. Research has shown that pollen collected from soil that has been generously fertilised with nitrogen contains neither nitrites nor nitrates. These results indicate that pollen undergoes complex biochemical processes that inactivate toxic plant compounds. This is evidence of the antioxidant properties of pollen. Pollen has antibacterial, antiviral, and immunostimulatory properties and can positively affect our health:

  • It promotes the assimilation of medicines and their effects;
  • It slows down the aging of the body and provides energy;
  • It is perfect for improving poor mood and in cases of insomnia;
  • It boosts the immune system when recovering from infections and other diseases and it reduces inflammation;
  • It helps with atherosclerosis and strengthens capillaries;
  • It helps with prostate illnesses and treats impotence;
  • It helps with menopausal neuroses and boosts libido;
  • It treats urinary, venereal, and circulatory diseases;
  • It regulates bowel function, improves metabolism, and helps treat the gastrointestinal tract diseases (dyskinesia, gastritis, ulcers);
  • It regulates bowel function when suffering from constipation or diarrhoea;
  • It helps with chronic hepatitis and inflammation of the gallbladder;
  • It has a positive effect on the nervous system and helps with nervous depression and chronic alcoholism;
  • It promotes the production of blood cells, increases the levels of blood proteins, haemoglobin, and erythrocytes and lowers blood cholesterol;
  • It improves the function of the cardiovascular system.

Pollen that has been collected by bees is known as entomophilous. In terms of its chemical composition and biological activity, it differs from the anemophilous pollen of fields and meadows that is distributed by the wind. The latter can enter the airways and cause allergies in some individuals, especially allergic rhinitis (hay-fever). Meanwhile, no such effect has been observed with entomophilous pollen, which is distributed from plant to plant by bees and other insects.

WILD MEADOW HONEY Pollen is natural. It is not subjected to any thermal, chemical or any other processes and it does not contain any additives. Our pollen is GMO-free because the bees are not genetically modified. Moreover, it is prohibited to cultivate GMOs in Lithuania and Latvia.
Our pollen is carefully inspected for any contamination before it is delivered to customers. We ensure that it does not contain any nitrites, nitrates, other contaminants, toxins, and radioactive substances.

Pollen is not recommended for adolescents during puberty due to the vitamin E and hormone content in pollen that can disturb the normal course of puberty. Allergies are rarely caused by pollen that has been collected by bees. Pollen is not recommended for people with bronchial asthma, allergies to medicines, especially to the B vitamin complex. Before you start any pollen treatment, you should consult a doctor, a specialist in the relevant field, or an apitherapy specialist.

Bee pollen can be used all year round as an additional natural source of complete protein, vitamins, micronutrients and many biologically active substances – especially in winter and spring. For adults taking pollen for several months in a row, we recommend taking a short break of a few weeks. It is best to dissolve the pollen in warm (not hot) water to break its shell before ingesting it and drink it in the morning before breakfast. Pollen can be mixed with honey, added to cocktails, fruit or vegetable salads – it all depends on your improvisational skills with flavours.

For adults, we recommend taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of pollen per day. For children, the dose should not exceed 1 tablespoon, or it can be as many grams of pollen as their age in years. Pollen should be taken for one or two months with a weekly break, preferably in the first half of the day. In case of a sensitive stomach, pollen can be mixed with honey (1:1 ratio) and taken as 2 to 4 tablespoons a day. This mixture can also be used to sweeten tea that is not too hot.

We recommend storing pollen in a dry and cool place. If pollen is stored for a long time, it ages and the amount of vitamins, amino acids and other biologically active substances decreases. If pollen’s moisture content is 10%, it must be packaged in glass containers, preferably made of tinted glass. The sealed pollen containers must be stored in a dark and well-ventilated room with an optimum temperature not exceeding +12° C.

The optimum storage time for pollen is one year when the above conditions are ensured. Pollen can preserve its valuable properties for up to two years when it is sealed and stored in these same conditions.
