Propolis is a remedy created by bees. It is a complex of natural, biologically active substances that bees collect from a variety of trees. Bees collect resin from the leaf buds and bark of certain trees and mix it with a little beeswax, honey, and enzymes produced by the bees themselves. The resulting propolis is a sticky and highly bioactive substance with potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is one of the most potent natural antibiotics offering a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. In bee colonies, propolis serves as part of the global immune system. Propolis is used to coat the entire inside of the beehive, including the honeycomb cells, where the queen bee lays eggs, as well as at the entrance to the beehive so that all incoming and outgoing bees pass through the propolis ‘doormat’. The word ‘propolis’ originates from Greek and means a ‘city defence’. Bees also use propolis to seal all cracks and unwanted gaps in the beehive.

Depending on its age, this resinous substance can range from yellowish to dark brown – it turns darker as it ages.

Propolis has a unique composition that makes it unlike any other known natural product or products synthesised in chemistry laboratories. Health professionals estimate that propolis contains more than 300 biologically active ingredients. It is also rich in vitamins B1, B2, B6, C and E, and many useful minerals, including magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium, copper, zinc, manganese, and iron. Propolis can preserve its valuable healing properties for more than 10 years.

Propolis is one of the oldest natural medicines and can be used to boost the body’s defences. Thousands of years ago, ancient civilisations were using propolis for medicinal purposes. The Greeks used propolis to treat abscesses and gatherings; the Assyrians put propolis on wounds and swollen areas to promote healing and fight infections; the Egyptians used propolis to embalm mummies and even considered it sacred. London’s official medicine lists included propolis as early as the 17th century.

It’s interesting that the chemical and even the physical composition of propolis may vary depending on the bees’ habitat and the trees and flowers in their environment. For example, European propolis will have a different chemical composition to propolis in Brazil. Propolis is made up of plant resin. It is one of the most potent natural antibiotics in the middle latitudes. It is also one of the few natural deodorants that has a very pleasant scent. However, this is only true of Lithuanian propolis. If you caught a whiff of Brazilian propolis, you may get quite a different impression.

Health professionals note that bee products are effective because our body can assimilate them perfectly. Propolis is considered the hope of future medicine due to its self-regulatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties. We already know more than 100 indications of propolis supporting the human health. However, consuming raw propolis is dangerous. In terms of its chemistry, this dark brown or reddish-brown substance collected by the worker bees is very complex.

Ethanol is the most common solvent used to extract active ingredients from propolis resin. Alcohol-based propolis (also known as propolis extract) offers the quickest effects, albeit its flavour is very intense.

Propolis is widely used in natural medicine as a food supplement for boosting people’s health. Generally, it is taken in the form of an extract or a capsule. However, extracts and tinctures are more convenient to use. An aqueous or ethanolic propolis solution tends to be used internally in the form of drops or a spray. Propolis oil is good for treating external wounds or as drops for the nose and throat. Propolis use is very common in medicine, food supplements, and cosmetics in the form of tablets, syrups, emulsions, pastes, various creams, etc. Our customers can choose from 80% or 95% propolis extracts and 20% or 30% ethyl alcohol-based tinctures. We also provide raw, unprocessed propolis in the form of granules and powder.

Please note that that if you have honey or bee allergies, you may also have an allergic reaction to products containing propolis.

Effects of the active ingredients in propolis on human health:

  • Flavonoids activate the human immune system.
  • Organic acids inhibit decay and fermentation processes, improve metabolism and the functioning of the digestive system.
  • Essential oils boost the immune system, inhibit the growth of microbes and fungi, stimulate, energise, and reduce stress.
  • Minerals such as manganese, zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sulphur, sodium, iron, and magnesium are necessary for the normal functioning of organs and organ systems.
  • Vitamins such as Bp, B2, B6, C, E, and A are necessary for the normal functioning of organs and organ systems, the immune system’s efficiency, and hormonal balance.
  • Inhibitors, antimicrobials, and other biologically active substances have antibacterial, antivirus, and antifungal properties.

  • Lithuanian (Baltic) propolis has an exceptional balmy fragrance that is only typical of this region’s nature. It is principally collected from pine, poplar, birch, aspen, spruce, and elm trees, as well as other shrubs in spring and late summer. It comes in pieces of different shapes and sizes, with colour variation from light brown to reddish brown and greyish black. It is primarily collected by scraping the frames and other wooden parts of the beehive. There are also special propolis collectors designed for collecting propolis.

The values of all the above parameters demonstrate that our propolis is a very pure and concentrated product that is free of any additives. Its raw purity is at a maximum, resin is up to 73%, and the beeswax and mechanical impurities do not exceed 30%. The composition of phenolic compounds has a fully expressed spectrum of flavonoids and carboxylic acids. The content of flavonoids is high, up to 5%. For a raw product, its chemical contamination is very low, which complies with the highest requirements for this category of raw material. The product is ideal for producing capsules, extract as well as for manufacturing pharmaceuticals, food supplements, and cosmetics with propolis as the main active ingredient. All specifications are based on detailed laboratory tests.

Why is propolis so beneficial?

Propolis is a potent natural antioxidant and detoxifier. Scientific research has shown that propolis has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and deodorant effects. It is effective for alleviating pain, stimulating tissue regeneration, and boosting the immune system. It also boasts antidepressant properties.

Propolis is a natural dietary supplement that can help prevent chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataracts, and rheumatoid arthritis. It inhibits the progress of cardiovascular and age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Propolis supports the immune system, promotes faster healing of wounds and skin disorders. It has antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties.

Propolis protects against radiation, cancer, the development of tumours and ulcers. It protects the heart, liver, and it has no side effects.

Research into the ways of staying protected against, and curing, the Covid-19 virus has demonstrated that the flavonoids in propolis ethanol extract were so potent that they could help protect against the coronavirus and reduce the risk of being infected with Covid-19 when used in combination with some other medicines.

Natural antibiotic. Researchers have said that no pharmaceutical company could ever create such a wonderful natural product.

Natural dietary supplement. The human body can only assimilate 20% to 40% of nutrients from food. On the other hand, it can assimilate up to 100% of bee products and their beneficial properties.

A boost to the immune system. Propolis has been shown to stimulate the immune system by constantly fighting foreign viruses and bacteria, increasing the body’s leukocyte activity and its resistance to infectious diseases.

Antioxidant, detoxifier. Propolis inhibits the formation of free radicals and related cell damage. It supports the levels of red blood cells in the blood.

Deodorant. Bees introduce fragrance to propolis when producing it to eliminate unpleasant odours and maintain the cleanliness in the beehive. Propolis is rich in fragrant acids and essential oils.

It inhibits aging. Propolis contains over 300 biologically active substances that increase the activity of immune cells, improve and stimulate cell metabolism, and inhibit oxidative processes in the body.
